Classified FAQs
- Q:
What types of classified ads do you run?
- A:
Our most popular sections include Vacation Rentals, Real Estate, Personals, Camp & School, and Harvard-in-Business. However, we have categories to fit almost any advertisement.
- Q:
What does it cost to advertise?
- A:
The cost is $5.25 per word. Telephone numbers, including the area code, count as one word. Words divided by a slash or hyphens are counted individually. Zip codes are free. E-mail addresses and websites count as two words each. There is a 15-word minimum. Click here for the complete list of options and prices.
- Q:
Does it cost anything to boldface or capitalize entire words in my ad?
- A:
Boldfacing the first two words of your text ad is standard practice. Additional boldfacing or the capitalization of entire words costs an extra $5.25 per word, doubling the cost of the word.
- Q:
Are there other ways to make my ad stand out?
- A:
There are four ways to make your ad stand out in print:
1. Add an icon to highlight your print ad for $25.
2. Add a Crimson border to your print ad for $50.
3. Buy a display ad, which allows for logos and artwork. Display ads cost $400 per column inch, and are available in increments of ¼”” (1-inch minimum), with a standard column width of 2 3/16””. Design services are also available for $60 per hour with a 1 hour minimum charge.
4. Buy an on-line classified ad. On-line classifieds appear concurrently with each printed issue for just $30 extra. This is an excellent way to reinforce your print advertisement. If you miss a print deadline and want to advertise on line instead, the cost is $5.25 per word (the same as a print ad). Another added bonus: your on-line ad can be linked directly to your webpage or e-mail address. You can also include photos in your on-line ad for $30.00 per photo. Crimson borders and icons are not available for on-line ads.
- Q:
Can I ask for my ad to be placed in a certain part of a section (e.g. the first ad in a category, not toward the bottom, etc.)?
- A:
Positioning guarantees are not available in the classifieds section. Ads are ordered on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Q:
When is my classified ad due?
- A:
The deadlines for each issue are as follows:

- Q:
What types of frequency discounts are there?
- A:
If you advertise between three and five times, you will receive a 5 percent discount. If you advertise six times or more, you will receive a 15 percent discount. For example: if you run a 20-word ad, your cost will be $105. If you run the ad three times, that cost will be $99.75 per insertion. If you run it six times, the cost will drop to $89.25! You will be saving yourself $15.75 per insertion. If you cancel your ad prior to running three or six times, you will be charged the non-discounted rate for what has already run.
- Q:
I’m not sure I’m getting my message across in the best manner. I need help figuring out how to word my ad!
- A:
If you aren’t sure how to word something, our first suggestion is to read through the classifieds in the magazine—this will give you an idea of how classifieds are generally worded, and “shortcuts” you can make. Click here to browse the classifieds on line. If you still are confused, call or e-mail and we will be happy to help you figure out the best way to communicate your message.
- Q:
How do I pay for my classified ad?
- A:
You can pay by credit card at the time of purchase or by check through the mail, as long as we receive your check by the ad deadline.
- Q:
How will I know if people are responding to my classified ad?
- A:
Depending on the manner in which you are asking people to contact you (by phone, e-mail, or on line), there may not be a way to know for certain that your ad in our magazine led a certain customer, client, or respondent your way. The best way to find out is to ask them where they heard about you. Harvard Magazine reaches over 220,000 readers, and our classifieds section affords you the opportunity to reach Harvard alumni and faculty members, an audience you can trust!
